Please Help More People to Survive Cancer

(Trek Mt. Everest Base Camp – March 2006)

Hello!

My name is Keira Ranat. I’m a 19-year-old medical student at Manchester University. After a very eye-opening lecture on oncology, given by a scientist working for Cancer Research UK, I took it upon myself to help raise money for this worthwhile charity and I need your help. Cancer Research UK helps fund scientists and researches to one, study the causes of cancer and two, most importantly, help find the most beneficial treatment in fighting this major killer.

It’s a frightening fact but more than one in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives. Cancer Research UK aims to conquer cancer by funding world-class research and within two generations it aims to have the disease under control. This can be only be done however, through funding and each year Cancer Research UK spend around £191 million on scientific research of which the majority of the money comes from public donations and public fundraising. To enable the scientists to do their job and give them the technology and labs they need, this amount of money and more is needed every year.

This is where I come in- with your help - I hope to raise at least £3500. In March 2006, I will be trekking to Mt. Everest Base Camp with thirty other people from across Britain to raise money. The challenge is gruelling 15days walking, reaching height of 17,600ft (Base Camp). I have already paid £350 towards travel expenses and now need to raise £3500 by Christmas 2005 to allow me to participate in this physically and mentally challenging expedition.

I have started training for this expedition by going to the gym four times a week and undertaking lots of hill walking (see picture of me at top of Ben Lawers, nr. Loch Tay). So this isn’t an easy challenge but will be enjoyable and extremely worthwhile if I can help fund the most important scientific research in the World.
